Please Stop With The Mass Mentions On Medium Stories
I don’t know about you but the amount of mass “mentions” happening here on Medium is pathetic.

What Are Mass Mentions?
Mass mentions are when a writer “tags” or “mentions” a load of people at the end of their story. They are also known as “shout-outs”.
Why Is This So Annoying?
Every time someone mentions us in their story, we get an alert. So, what do we do? We click on the story and read to where we are “mentioned”. Most reasonable people will mention another writer when they are giving them a shout-out to one of their stories.
But lately, writers are being mentioned at the end of a story, just to get their attention. And I’m not talking 5 or 6 mentions, I’m talking 30, 40, 50 even! I’m finding certain writers are mentioning me in ALL of their stories!
What Does This Do?
It means that we read to the end of the story, thinking we are getting a shout-out for one of our own stories when in actual fact, we aren’t. The writer of that story is ensuring reads and earnings by mentioning or tagging you.
Desperate Much?
Yep, clearly!
- There are a number of writers who do this consistently.
- Those same writers then brag about their monthly earnings.
- It feels like they are cheating the system.
Am I Jealous?
Mildly. I’m jealous that they are abusing the system and gaining $$$ from it. But I will never resort to mass mentions! I’ll only mention someone if I truly believe that my story resonates with them or that it’s something that might interest them.
